Assembly Considers Bill to Let Midwives Do Unsupervised Abortion

(California Family Council) In 2013, California lowered the health safety standards for women by letting non-physicians, including nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and certified nurse-midwives do first-trimester surgical and medical abortions. State legislators are at it again this year with the introduction of SB 1237, a bill to remove the requirement that certified nurse-midwives be directly supervised by a doctor.

The bill, authored by Senator Bill Dodd (D) Napa, has already passed the State Senate and is scheduled for a hearing before the Assembly Business and Professions Committee next Monday, August 7.
