SEEING THE UNSEEN

“Now Jericho was shut up inside and outside because of the people of Israel. None went out, and none came in. And the Lord said to Joshua, ‘See, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and mighty men of valor.’” -Joshua 6:1-2 (ESV)

Imagine standing before an impenetrable fortress. There is no way in. All the doors are shut and every gate is barred. There are no methods to scale its walls. From every logical human perspective, moving forward seems foolish, a waste of time. This is Joshua standing before Jericho’s walls, yet in the midst of impossibility, the Lord spoke to His servant, “See!”

The Lord called Joshua to see the invisible. Joshua did not need to look at the fortress; he needed to see an all sufficient God. The fortress was impossible for Joshua and the nation of Israel to penetrate, but God said, “I have given it to you.” From heaven’s perspective, Jericho had already fallen, and the victory was secured before the battle had begun. Just because Israel was limited did not mean for one second that God was powerless.

God calls us to walk by faith, not by sight. From time to time, a Jericho stands in front of us. There are no answers and we do not know how to proceed, but then the Lord speaks: “See!” The next step for Joshua and the nation of Israel was simply to march, walk it out, believe, and shout, and the walls would fall!

May the Lord open our eyes to realize we are victorious, and to know the battle is the Lord’s.
