Dear Union Church,

Ready, set, GO! We officially kicked off the fall season last Sunday with all of its excitement and the thrill of new beginnings. What a day! Speaking of new beginnings, congratulations are in order to our Administrative Assistant, Ashley Reeves, as she and her husband Ben welcomed into the world their son, Paxton. Paxton Phillip Reeves was born to them at 6:33am on Monday, September 20th. Please pray for both Ashley and baby as they both remain at the hospital undergoing some additional medical care. Kellyn Von Arx will be filling in for Ashley while she is away on maternity leave, so please bear with us as we make that transition.

Also, bear with us as we work out some of the kinks with our new, revised Discipleship Connect Hour. The children will be in class until 10 :30 a.m. We ask that parents take advantage of the opportunity to review the lesson for the day and suggested family activities for the week based upon the lesson. Handouts for parents will be located in the Lounge, outside the main church office on the 1st level of the CE wing. Feel welcome to grab a cup of coffee and proceed to the Lounge following worship. Those parents who choose not to join the conversation in the Lounge, should please wait in Fellowship Hall until 10:30 a.m. You will pick your children up in Fellowship Hall. This will prevent the interruption of the children’s classes.

Finally, would you please pray for our beloved friend and long-time member, Jackie Pfaub. Jackie is presently in hospice care at Allegheny General and it appears that her time with us this side of eternity is quickly approaching. So, please pray for her and her family during this sad and difficult time.

This coming Sunday I will continue part two in our series, Christianity 101. The sermon title is “The Beloved Community” and I can’t wait to be with you in worship!

See ya in church!
Billy

Our book discussion group begins at noon (12 p.m.) on Tuesday, October 5th. We will be discussing Sheila Walsh's book, It's Okay Not To Be Okay. Bring your lunch and join us in Fellowship Hall for a time of sharing as we are reminded that God loves us even when we don't have it all together. If you are looking to join a new group - Welcome! If you have any questions, please call Sally Andrews (412) 787 2645.

The Sermon on the Mount - Jesus Teaches Kingdom Living

Have you every found yourself wondering what the Kingdom of God is all about? Jesus announces that the Kingdom is near; one should seek to enter the Kingdom; the Kingdom is something that grows; that it is worth more than anything else we might obtain in life. But how do we recognize the Kingdom? How do we know if we have entered the Kingdom? Jesus does not leave us in the dark. In Matthew 5-7, the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus teaches his disciples about the Kingdom of God. Come join us for a five-week study of the Sermon on the Mount. We’ll gather at the Noble House from 7-8:30 p.m. beginning Wednesday, October 6th. Let Tom know that you plan to join the study by emailing him at tbribar@outlook.com, or call Ashley at the church office.

Mission and Outreach Kickoff

TODAY at Noon, the Mission and Outreach Team will be gathering in Fellowship Hall after the church service. This is a great opportunity for you to join the team and get involved! We have several opportunities to serve this fall, so please join us for one of these opportunities and/or join us for this meeting.

Opportunities to Serve This Fall

The Usher Team

Join this ministry that helps guests and members experience the joy of worshipping God. Ushers create a great hospitality experience by helping people find a seat if needed, and making the service run smoothly by passing collection plates, taking attendance and more. If you are interested, speak to or email Tom MacLachlan at thomas.maclachlan@pnc.com

The Welcome Team

Union desires to foster a warm, friendly, hospitable environment that surprises skeptics, eases the unchurched, and empowers members. Join the Welcome Team and help us! It’s fun and easy, say hello, exude warmth and friendliness. As Christ has welcomed you, so welcome one another. For more information contact Anne Burke at aburke3503@gmail.com

The Coffee Fellowship Team

Coffee, tea and snacks are an essential component of Sunday morning church life and community. Join the Coffee Fellowship Team and help provide for this much needed ministry. Tasks include setting up, cleaning up and just providing help where needed. If you feel called to serve, speak to or email Joann Barker jobarker59@comcast.net

The Live-Stream Team

[TBR] As we move to two worship services, we would like to expand our Live-Stream Team that takes care of operating the camera and the streaming box. The technology is pretty simple and easy to use. If you are the least bit tech savvy, this could be a good fit for you. We plan to put together a rotation so that team members would be responsible for 1 or 2 Sundays a month. If you are interested, speak to or email Pastor Tom at tbribar@outlook.com

The Nursery Team

Our new format for worship and the Discipleship Connect Hour will require expanded hours for our nursery care for infants and toddlers. We encourage parents and grandparents to consider signing up for one Sunday a quarter to help in the nursery. (Of course you don’t have to be a parent or grandparent to help out! All adults are welcome!) The nursery will always have one paid staff who will “be in charge.” Adults who sign up to serve will act as helpers, so there is no need for extensive knowledge of the nursery procedures or special clearances. Just an affinity for holding babies, changing diapers, and loving the children of our Union Family! If you are interested, speak to or email Pastor Tom at tbribar@outlook.com

Serve with the Praise Team

The Praise Team is looking for individuals who would like to play either piano or bass guitar during our contemporary worship services. If you are interested, speak to or email Anthony Calvario anthonycalvario@gmail.com
