Hi Friends and Family of Union Church,

We have hit ground running as we enter the month of September! School traffic has resumed, the cooler weather has broken through, and we look forward to Rally Day in one week, September 12th. Then we welcome our new worship and discipleship schedule on September 19th. We have put a lot of work into the planning and preparation for resuming the schedule of two worship services with a Discipleship Connect Hour in between. All this work is done to help us grow in relationship with the Lord and one another.

Speaking of hard work, this Labor Day weekend we celebrate the laborers who make our country function. These are the men and women whose dedication makes life as we know it in these United States possible. It is no coincidence that the Lord is the first “laborer.” The story of time and space and human history begins with the Lord’s labor of love – the creation and humankind as the pinnacle of that creation. In fact, we who are created in the Lord’s image live into our calling as image-bearers, in part, as workers, laborers, and as co-creators with the Lord, taking the “stuff” of creation and making something of it!

The determining factor in our labor on the Lord’s behalf is aligning our every effort with the faith that is handed down to us through God’s word. This week in worship, we will be hearing the Letter of Jude. This letter is a short 24 verses, and yet is packed with wise teaching about our identity in Jesus Christ. Maybe you will find a moment to read through the Letter of Jude before worship on Sunday? Consider Jude’s words that challenge us to persevere in our faithfulness to the Gospel. Be encouraged by his Benediction – the good words with which he concludes his letter – “Now to the one who is able to keep you…!” When we belong to him, we may live in the faith that the Lord labors with us in this life. Have a great start to your weekend. See you in worship on Sunday.

Peace,

Tom

P.S. We will also celebrate both the Lord’s Table and the sacrament of Baptism on Sunday!

Mask Policy

“The leadership of Union Church is well aware that COVID cases are on the uptick in several parts of the country. If those numbers should increase in our community, and/or we are given a mask mandate by the government, we may need to change our mask policy. But for now, we will not require masks to be worn for the worshipping community of Union Church and we will leave it up to individuals and families to make that decision. We know that many in our church have strong feelings regarding masks and vaccinations. As followers of Jesus, we are to be gracious with each other and give to each other grace to have differing views, and to see each other in light of the gospel.”

Trustee Work Day

The Trustees will be having a work day on September 11th from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you are interested in participating, please see Don Tidball.

Women's Study

We have decided on the book, Have Serious Fun: And 12 Other Principles to Make Each Day Count by Jim Burns. Jim was the author of our prior study, Living Life with Your Adult Children. We will meet the first and third Tuesdays of the month at 7 p.m. in the Nobel House, beginning September 21st. We are asking some of you to step up to facilitate if you feel led. If you are interested in participating in this study, please contact Ashley Reeves in the church office. Please purchase your book prior to our first meeting. Deadline to register is September 19th

Knitters and Crocheters Outreach

Looking for a mission project? Come and learn how to knit or crochet baby afghans. We just gave 104 baby afghans to Magee Women’s Hospital picked up by MedSpeed and delivered to Magee and clinics throughout Alleghany County. They are given to the less fortunate newborns. We thank all of you who continue to give yarn and monetary donations, they are much appreciated. Call Loraine at (412) 452-0297.

Open Flower Calendar Date

If you would like to purchase flowers to honor or remember a loved one, call the office. $30 check payable to Union Church Deacons [placed in the offering any Sunday]. Flowers can be picked-up in the kitchen after service or donated for delivery to a Union Church member. Remaining available date for 2021 is December 5th.

Opportunities to Serve This Fall

The Usher Team

Join this ministry that helps guests and members experience the joy of worshipping God. Ushers create a great hospitality experience by helping people find a seat if needed, and making the service run smoothly by passing collection plates, taking attendance and more. If you are interested, speak to or email Tom MacLachlan at thomas.maclachlan@pnc.com

The Welcome Team

Union desires to foster a warm, friendly, hospitable environment that surprises skeptics, eases the unchurched, and empowers members. Join the Welcome Team and help us! It’s fun and easy, say hello, exude warmth and friendliness. As Christ has welcomed you, so welcome one another. For more information contact Anne Burke at aburke3503@gmail.com

The Coffee Fellowship Team

Coffee, tea and snacks are an essential component of Sunday morning church life and community. Join the Coffee Fellowship Team and help provide for this much needed ministry. Tasks include setting up, cleaning up and just providing help where needed. If you feel called to serve, speak to or email Joann Barker jobarker59@comcast.net

The Live-Stream Team

[TBR] As we move to two worship services, we would like to expand our Live-Stream Team that takes care of operating the camera and the streaming box. The technology is pretty simple and easy to use. If you are the least bit tech savvy, this could be a good fit for you. We plan to put together a rotation so that team members would be responsible for 1 or 2 Sundays a month. If you are interested, speak to or email Pastor Tom at tbribar@outlook.com

The Nursery Team

Our new format for worship and the Discipleship Connect Hour will require expanded hours for our nursery care for infants and toddlers. We encourage parents and grandparents to consider signing up for one Sunday a quarter to help in the nursery. (Of course you don’t have to be a parent or grandparent to help out! All adults are welcome!) The nursery will always have one paid staff who will “be in charge.” Adults who sign up to serve will act as helpers, so there is no need for extensive knowledge of the nursery procedures or special clearances. Just an affinity for holding babies, changing diapers, and loving the children of our Union Family! If you are interested, speak to or email Pastor Tom at tbribar@outlook.com

Serve with the Praise Team

The Praise Team is looking for individuals who would like to play either piano or bass guitar during our contemporary worship services. If you are interested, speak to or email Anthony Calvario anthonycalvario@gmail.com
