Hello Union Church Family and Friends!

I would guess that most of us, at some point in our walk with Jesus, have prayed something along the lines of “Lord, help me to grow to be more like Jesus; help me to follow Jesus daily.” And, if we could hear the audible words of the Lord’s reply, it might sound something like Jesus’ reply to the mother of James and John, when she asked Jesus to grant that her sons sit at his right and left in the Kingdom, “You do not know what you are asking!” We think that we are asking the Lord to do for us in a way that will make our life more comfortable, manageable, and drama-free. When in fact, to pray for a closer walk with Jesus is to pray for a share in his life of servanthood, of sacrificial love. Such a prayer is akin to Mr. Beaver’s reply to Susan in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe when Susan first learns about Aslan. Susan, upon finding out that Aslan is a lion, wonders if he is “safe” to meet. Mr. Beaver assures her that no one said anything about safe! Aslan is not safe…but he is good!

We worship in order to have a closer walk with Jesus. Not the safe Jesus of popular folklore. In worship we encounter Jesus in all his ferocity, but a good ferocity! We gather on Sunday to offer the Lord our hearts in worship, in response to his grace and mercy that the Lord pours out abundantly for the sake of a closer walk with him. I hope that you will join us on Sunday – in person or online – and be reminded of the Lord’s deep love for you, and the promise of the Holy Spirit who gives us power to follow Jesus wherever he might lead us!

Families with young children, please remember that we will post a new lesson for viewing, on Sunday morning, that you access then, or anytime thereafter. You may access this week’s lesson at the Union Church YouTube channel, under the DiscipleSHIP playlist. (Hint: if you subscribe to the Union Church YouTube channel, it will be much easier to find all our video and Live Stream!)

Lastly, please find the attached flyer that provides more detail for the Mission Team’s post-worship auction and fellowship on May 23rd, which is also our first of four outdoor worship Sundays this summer. Mark your calendars now and ready your camp chairs for a glorious morning on the hill, worshipping together and supporting Union’s mission efforts.

See you Sunday!

Peace,

Tom

Food Pantry Donations Needed

The Deacons are accepting non-perishable grocery items for the monthly food pantry. We need spaghetti sauces, cake mixes, icing, canned fruit and vegetables as well as chili ingredients. We do accept all food donations. Additionally, paper products, cleaning supplies, health and beauty items will be accepted. Please put all donations in the donation boxes in Fellowship Hall. Thank you for your support!

Union and 412 Rescue

Currently a 412 volunteer delivers produce every Sunday between 10-12 that needs to be unpacked and separated into bags to be used before it spoils. We have offered this additional service to our present Food Pantry clients as a supplement to our monthly boxes. What food we have left we encourage our members to take to share with family, friends and neighbors who are food insecure. Anyone wishing to help with delivery and bagging is welcome to help. Please contact one of your deacons to volunteer!
