Union's Weekly Update 12/18/20

Dear Union Family,

The Covid virus is demanding a lot from all sectors of our culture – educators, parents, small business owners, sports teams, political leaders and churches have been affected. Covid has forced us to adapt, innovate and constantly adjust in response to its temperamental ups and down. Like many parts of the country, Allegheny County had recently been experiencing Covid infections at a much higher rate. Due to this, the pastors and session decided it was probably imprudent to hold in-person Christmas Eve services. Several factors led us to this decision including the typically larger attendance on Christmas Eve, as well as our desire to abide by the latest restrictions put forth by our health experts. These two reasons and more made cancelling in-person Christmas Eve worship the wisest choice.

Our reaction (“Well that stinks!”) could mirror that of other Covid cancellations and disappointments. However, we are choosing to see this as another great opportunity— for which we could use your help. We are planning to film two Christmas Eve services and make them available online. The services will be available at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Christmas Eve and will continue to be available to watch any time after that. The 5:00 service “Finding Jesus in Bethlehem” is a more family-centered service with several folks playing the parts of Jesus’ family and the shepherds. The 7:00 service will be our Traditional Service of Lessons and Carols, both with choir assemble and strings.

Here is where we need your help. Please pray that many people will watch and that the grace of God will surprise and attract many. Please gather with your family and out-of-town guests on December 24th and worship with us. Please invite neighbors and friends to watch in their homes, too. We believe the best way to respond to the despair and darkness of 2020 is to warm our hearts with and introduce our community to the light of the world. “In Jesus was life and that life was the light of men” (John 1:4).

Sincerely,

Billy

P.S. Other than Christmas Eve, our upcoming worship service schedule is as follows:

“Journey to Bethlehem” – Family Encounter with Jesus

We are making plans to celebrate the Christmas season in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. As Christmas draws closer, we long to be reminded of the good news of Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem. We need to hear now, more than ever, about Jesus who is the everlasting light. We invite you and your family to take a special trip to Bethlehem, where “the hopes and fears of all the years” were met on that holy night over two thousand years ago. At 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve, tune in to Union's YouTube Channel to listen to the story of Jesus’ birth through the eyes of Joseph, Joseph’s family, Mary, and the shepherds.

Christmas Eve Candle Light Service

Our Christmas Eve Candle Light Service is still happening, but will look a bit different this year. Instead of meeting in person, we will be offering a video streamed version of our Christmas Eve Service. The service will still be full of the Christmas Carols and message you love, but from the safety of your home. Please join us this Christmas Eve at 7 p.m. on Union's YouTube channel.

From the Mission Committee!

The Mission Committee would like to those who participated in our Angel Tree, Bradley Center and Guatemala Baskets.

Union came through once again with gifts for 66 Angel Tree children of prisoners along with a $25 gift card for each family, gifts for 12 Bradley Center youth, and over $5900 for Guatemala Baskets. What a blessing you have been to so many!

A Warm Thank You!

On behalf of the congregation, a huge thank you to everyone who has worked hard to make livestream possible. Thank you to the worship team that helps lead us in song, the behind the scene workers who make things flow seamlessly, and the pastors who provide us with encouraging messages week after week.

We appreciate all that you are doing to let us continue to grow in our faith and spend time in God's presence even from our homes. We look forward to worshiping together again soon!
