    I Thessalonians 1:1-10

    1. As we begin a new series of Bible Study we need to prepare our hearts and minds for the lessons the Lord has in store for us in the weeks ahead as we study First and Second Thessalonians. May we seek the Lord whole heartedly and be teachable as we open His Word. Begin your lesson by writing a prayer asking the Lord to guide and teach you as you study.

    2. I Thessalonians is Paul's letter, along with Timothy and Silas, written to a young church he began in the prosperous city of Thessalonica during his second missionary journey around 51 or 52 A.D. Print his greeting to the church from I Thessalonians 1:1b.

    a. As a believer share how you have experienced the Lord's grace
    and peace.

Optional: Read Acts 17:1-15 and report Paul's experience as he preached
Christ during this part of his journey. (Use other paper if desired.)
    3. Read I Thessalonians 1:2-5. What do you learn about the new believers in Thessalonica through these verses?

    4. Paul gave thanks and prayed for this church by making mention of them in his prayers. How is this an example for you to follow?

    a. Offer a prayer now giving thanks and mentioning those in the
    church you attend.

    5. According to I Thessalonians 1:6-7, what result did the Gospel and the Word have on those to whom this letter was written?

Personal: Consider who you are following as you walk with Jesus. Are they leading you closer to the Lord? Who might be following you? Where are you leading them? Ask the Lord to help you if changes are needed.

    6. In I Thessalonians 1:8-9a we can see the extent of the Thessalonian believers' faith in spite of the persecution they had endured (verse 6). These verses in the New Living Translation (NLT) read, And now the word of the Lord is ringing out from you to people everywhere, even beyond Greece, for wherever we go we find people telling us about your faith in God. We don't need to tell them about it, for they themselves keep talking about the wonderful welcome you gave us. What role do you think the joy of the Holy Spirit (verse 6) played in their example of faith?

    a. Why can a believer experience persecution or hardship and still
    have joy?

    7. Not only were the believers in Thessalonica known for their faith, their faith had brought about changes in their lives that were also part of their reputation. View this in I Thessalonians 1:9b-10. What do you see?

    8. They turned to God from idols . . . I Thessalonians 1:9b. An idol has been described as anyone or anything that we love more than God and that keeps us from serving Him. What did you turn from when you turned to God?

    9. They turned to serve the living and true God . . . I Thessalonians 1:9c. As a believer how are you serving the Lord?

    10. They were waiting for the Lord's return according to the first phrase of I Thessalonians 1:10. Use the following verses to tell the effect living in expectation of the Lord's return should have on a believer:
    a. Matthew 24:42,44

    b. Titus 2:11-13

    c. I John 3:2-3

    11. What is declared about God and Jesus in I Thessalonians 1:10?

    a. How does the last phrase of this verse minister to you today?

    12. Share ways you want to follow the example of the believers in the church in Thessalonica.
